Burris pees in Harry Reid’s Cheerios..
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White refused to sign off on Burris’s appointment, which was announced on Tuesday.
Another twist to the firestorm brewing in Chicago politics. Burris’s attorneys have filed a lawsuit asking the Illinois Supreme Court to certify his appointment, demanding Secretary of State Jesse White sign off and confirm Blagojevich’s pick of former Attorney General Roland Burris to Obama’s Senate seat.
Meanwhile, never let it be said, DNC leaders let the grass grow under their feet. Fearing (Ha!) the taint of impropriety because Burris is Blago’s hand picked choice, Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid said he would not accept Burris as a member of their caucus. In fact, Democratic Aides are looking into procedural techniques blocking Burris’s appointment because of Blagojevich’s arrest on corruption charges. (guilt by association?)
Political Jujitsu at it’s finest. Harry Reid suggests he will deny Burris office space and will not under any circumstance recognize Burris as the new Jr Senator from Illinois when Congress resumes. However, opinions are mixed as to whether Reid has any legal standing to make his claims reality.
What I see is Mr Burris is no stranger to the legal system. As a former attorney general he is carrying his own water with assistance from legal aides right up to the Illinois Supreme Court for enforcement of Gov Blagojevich’s decision to have him fill the senate seat recently vacated by Obama. (I believe he will succeed without much trouble.)
The stalling and blocking plan threatened by Harry Reid, I don’t believe will gather much steam. First of all, Blago’s appointment is legal. Reid is depending on the withholding of SOS White’s certification as buying time to bring the issue before the Ethics Committee.
And third, Reid is denying representation to the citizens of Illinois. Time is not on Reid’s side to accomplish what he claims as the high road.
(And another thing, isn’t the current Ethic’s Committee a creation of Barack Obama? A committee that has been locked in stasis and rendered toothless over Bush appointments?)
If you want to have a really good laugh, Burris, the new would be Senator from Illinois already has a very impressive memorial mausoleum type monument erected in Chicago’s Oak Wood’s Cemetery. A memorial literally carved in stone detailing his accomplishments in Chicago politics.
