94% of Americans believe members of Congress are corrupt

July 30, 2011

Nearly half of Americans believe that most members of Congress are corrupt, according to a new poll.

Voter approval of Congress has fallen to a new low: just 6% believe their elected officials are doing a good job.

The new Rasmussen Reports poll also found a whopping 85% of voters believe congressional members are more interested in advancing their own careers than helping average Americans.

“They’re opportunists,” a disgusted William Hiroshi Loob, 50, of Brooklyn said. “They don’t represent us, they represent the money.”

Loob’s sentiments were reflected in yet another pathetic poll number – some 46% of those polled believe Congress is full of crooks.

“Of course they’re crooks,” said Portia Grimes of Brooklyn. “They start poor, but when they get into office they become millionaires. They mix and mingle and they’re corrupted.”

“They take huge political contributions to play political games,” added Mary White, 72, a retired Manhattan lawyer. “They don’t act in our interests.”

The percentage of respondents who believe Congress is on the take has climbed 7% since June, Rasmussen reported.

“They’re self-serving,” said Stanley Carless, a 50-year-old from the Bronx who is unemployed. “They’re more in it for personal gain and power. We’re not represented.”

Typically, voters responding to polls tend to favor their own reps. Not this time.

Just 31% polled said their representative was best for the job. And I’m sure that is an overstatement.
